A well kept and groomed hair is the first most noticeable part for anyone. Everyone’s hair is different because of the texture, colour, volume, growth and so follow different hair routines and hair care. Hair issues too vary from person to person. The markets are flooded with all types of hair care products like shampoo, conditioner, oils, do they really do good or just harm. Companies are becoming innovative and lure customers to lucrative offers which blind people. Most of these products have chemicals that are really harsh on the hair and scalp. Sometimes we get really tired of all these hair care routines. Essential Oils for your Hair

It is very important for us to care for our hair, like the other parts of our body. But no matter how much you take care of and nourish your tresses, we all fall prey to at least one hair problem or the other. What we need are some simple yet effective hair care solutions to solve such hair problems. Oiling, massaging is all therapy and treatment which will be good for your hair. Pure Essential oils used in Aromatherapy does a lot of benefits for hair. Apart from the smell, essential oils are helpful because of their antiseptic and antifungal properties. They have been used in alternative medicine for thousands of years. Essential oils are a concentrated form of plant extracts that impart their odour and flavour. It may take more than 200 pounds of a plant to make just 1 pound of essential oil. The benefit of essential oils is that only a small amount may have a strong effect. So we should be judicious in using them. Let’s look at some of the essential oils and the benefit they have:-



Lavender essential oil, popular for its divine smell, purple colour and healing properties and also aids in hair growth. It has antimicrobial as well as antibacterial properties which can help improve scalp health and is known to stimulate hair growth, fight dandruff, and soothe an itchy scalp and other infections.

How to use it:

Lavender essential oil (2-3 drops) with jojoba oil (2 tbsp) can boost hair growth. Mix and massage on the scalp and leave it for an hour and then wash with warm water.
A hair mask of Rosemary oil (10 drops), Basil (5 drops), Lavender(10 drops) jojoba(2 tbsp) and coconut oil can give you shiny hair and is a good moisturiser for your scalp.


Rosemary essential oil has been effective to increase hair growth. When massaged onto the scalp, it works by stimulating scalp circulation and helps in the growth of longer hair, prevent baldness or stimulate new hair growth in balding areas. Rosemary oil also slows the greying of hair, promotes shininess and prevents and reduces dandruff, making it a great tonic for overall hair health and beauty.

How to use it:

It can be used daily or as often as you wish, as long as there is no reaction. It is also recommended that the night application every day for at least the first 6 months will have potential hair growth.

Tea tree pure essential oil has active ingredients that provide antimicrobial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The Tea tree oil combats the bacteria on the scalp forming dandruff and irritation and gives relief from itching.

How to use it:

Generally, anyone with dandruff or other scalp inflammation can benefit from tea tree oil. Tea tree oil can be used on all hair types and textures, but it can be irritating, so those with sensitive skin should use it cautiously.


Peppermint oil has not been directly linked to hair growth, but research mentions that Menthol, the main component in peppermint oil, has been shown to increase blood flow to the area where it is applied so the better blood circulation to the skin, it encourages more hair to grow in the affected area.

How to use it:

Peppermint should be diluted either with a carrier oil like jojoba oil or coconut oil. It is also advised to add peppermint essential oil along with the shampoo or conditioner before use. Add 1 or 2 drops to the shampoo or conditioner in their hand, mix it, and apply it to the hair.


Eucalyptus has antifungal properties which give relief and works well for those who have dry, itchy scalps—especially those with dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis. It also prevents yeast buildup on the scalp and boosts hair growth.

How to use it:

Eucalyptus oil must be combined with a carrier oil, such as grape seed oil, argan oil, avocado oil etc as it is very strong. However, since it’s an essential oil, it should be used with caution if you have sensitive skin.


Holy basil is rich in vitamins and flavonoids. It is a natural stimulant so massaging Tulsi oil into the scalp improves blood circulation that stimulates hair follicles, which promotes the production of healthy, new hair. It is commonly used for herbal hair loss treatments. It also keeps your scalp feeling fresh and cool, rejuvenates your hair follicles, and promotes circulation in the scalp, thereby reducing hair fall.

How to use it:

Apply the hair oil on hair overnight and rinse in the morning. It improves circulation and makes your scalp healthier. It also promotes hair growth and reduces any itchiness in the scalp. Mix Tulsi oil with carrier oils like coconut oil or castor oil. Apply the mixture onto your hair scalp and gently massage.

Jojoba is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, all of which helps reduce scalp inflammation that appears as redness, itching, or flaking. It has natural antifungal and antibacterial agents, works on dandruff, and can even help calm your flakes.

How to use it:

Use it as a sealant and add a few drops to your fingers and run them through your hair to coat the strands from root to tip before you shampoo.
Add a few drops or 1-2 tablespoons of jojoba oil to a hair conditioner to enhance its softening and moisturizing abilities.
For dandruff or deep-conditioning treatment, it is recommended to take a handful of oil into your scalp and run through your dry or slightly damp hair at bedtime. Then cover it with a shower cap before going to sleep, and shampoo it out in the morning.

Almond oil is rich in Vitamin E(an antioxidant), monounsaturated fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc, besides a number of other minerals and vitamins. It’s great for all hair types, as it’s a very lightweight oil.

How to use it:

Add half a teaspoon of almond oil to two teaspoons of carrier oil, and a teaspoon of castor oil. Heat this mix for three to four minutes, before application.


Onion oil is good for nourishment to the headband and helps fight hair and scalp problems. Regular head massage with warm onion oil to help improve blood circulation in the scalp.

How to use it:

Apply onion hair oil on the hair strands to smooth down and seal the cuticles and restore hair’s natural shine and softness. Regular use of the onion hair oil helps to grow hair faster, almost 4 to 6 weeks for complete hair growth.


Neem oil has been used from ancient times from head to toe because of its antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties. Application of neem on hair and scalp is believed to act as a natural remedy for dandruff and other scalp issues, including inflammation and itchiness. Neem oil also contains fatty acids, vitamin E, triglycerides, antioxidants, and calcium, all of which contribute to a healthy scalp environment.

How to use it:

Apply diluted neem oil once per day for one to two hours at a time. Leaving it on your scalp longer or using it more frequently may result in irritation. Make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil before application.
Add neem oil to your favourite shampoo, the shampoo should be massaged into the scalp and pulled through the ends of the hair.

Word of Caution:

A little caution about essential oil is that as mentioned earlier it’s concentrated and can be toxic, which means a little can go a long way. So it needs carrier oils like coconut, almond. It can also be diluted with other essential oils like rosemary, peppermint, jojoba, coconut oil depending on the type of treatment it is to be used for.
