Women's Day Special: Health Tips for Today's Women

Women are the epitome of strength, love, sacrifice and courage. The role of women in today’s world has changed significantly and for the better. As of today’s women, we are free to challenge ourselves against gender equality, freedom, empowerment. Women are now self-sufficient, well aware and financially independent. We have attained immense success in every field, whether it is sports, politics or academics and we find women accepting the challenge and now marching side by side with men, in every walk of life.

When it comes to challenges, we are reminded that as women we face the maximum health challenges. Being a man or a woman has a significant impact on health, as a result of both biological and gender-related differences. As the biological clock keeps ticking from a child to a teenage girl, lady, women have to deal with a couple of things like the change in hormones, pregnancy-related issues, menopause etc. Normally workload, busy schedule, multitasking, dual responsibility of work and house do take a toll on the health and can cause issues like infertility, PCOD, skin & hair damage, sleeplessness, thyroid, obesity, etc therefore proper care is needed according to the changes. Some healthy tips which we can follow are:

  • Eat healthy to stay healthy:

Establishing good food habits and eating nutritious food is very important. It’s about fuelling your body with good energy sources so that it can work at its optimum capacity. Eating smaller portions spread out over the day, eating a variety of whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables every day. It is said having healthy food is half the battle won.

  • Say no to sugar and salt:

Cut down the amount of sugar and salt from your food. Studies prove that these two are mostly associated with the risk of weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease and others.

Fitness all the way- keep moving:
Be physically active. Many feel exercise as the first step towards weight loss but it does far more than that. It helps combat disease such as high blood pressure, depression, certain types of cancer, stroke, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. It boosts certain brain chemicals which leaves you feeling happier and more relaxed than before. Exercise boosts your energy, improves your sex life and helps you get better sleep.

  • Keep yourself hydrated:

Drinking water is crucial to maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles. Bored with normal water intake? Try lemon and honey water, natural juices, green tea, coconut water or water-rich fruits to keep yourself hydrated.

  • Manage your stress and mental health:

Women are prone to stress due to the variations in hormonal levels and the multiple roles they carry out. Stress results in anxiety, depression, eating disorders etc. Stress also makes females prone to indigestion, obesity, muscle spasms etc. Our mental health is just as important as our physical one. No matter how stressful your life is, there are steps that you can take to decrease your body’s stress response and to be doing good self-care. Take a walk, visit a friend, read a good book, go for a massage, pray and relax.

Ayurveda and Women Health

Ayurveda attaches great importance to the various physiological conditions a woman goes through in her life. According to Ayurveda, our body is made up of five elements, that is, earth, water, fire, air or space in different proportions that define our doshas or biochemical forces. Generally three doshas depending on which element is dominant—Vata, Pitta and Kapha. An imbalance of one or more of these doshas causes health problems. The ayurvedic approach is to correct the root cause of the visible symptoms instead of just suppressing them. Some of the find outs are:
  1. If you’re suffering from PCOS, it is mainly your pitta that is imbalanced and Ayurveda suggests you go for a healthy lifestyle.
  2. If you are dealing with skin and hair related issues, your body is telling you that your pitta level needs to be kept in check. One way you can do that is by avoiding hot and spicy food, junk food, or food that is too sweet or too salty.
  3. If you’re dealing with obesity, you are probably eating more than your body needs.
